Over the past several years, attempts have been made to assess the current status of physical education in New York City. City decision-makers have requested improvements from the NYC Department of Education regarding oversight, organizational planning and overall implementation of the state standards for physical education.8 It was a result of this public dialogue that the American Heart Association’s Advocacy Committee in New York City developed and implemented a survey project to analyze physical education in our city schools.
