About Phys Ed 4 All
The Phys Ed for All (PE4All) Coalition is comprised of community-based organizations, advocates, parents, educators, health professionals, and school administrators who are deeply committed to improving wellness by increasing access to quality physical education (phys ed, or PE) in New York City public schools. The PE4All Coalition takes a multi-pronged approach to improving PE access, including community education, outreach, and legislative advocacy.
Despite the well-documented benefits of PE for children’s health and academic achievement, Department of Education (DOE) schools routinely fail to provide their students with the physical education that is required by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Given the high rates in New York City of health issues tied to lack of physical education, such as heart disease and asthma, it is vital that the city ensure equal access to quality PE in DOE schools, particularly in low-income communities of color.
